Which thrillers are your own personal favorites and why?
My favorite thriller movie would have to be "Taken" because it keeps you in so much suspense to see whether he will get his daughter back or not.Watching thriller films just gives you that vibe.

Why do people watch thriller films?
I think there are a few reasons. One is that people like to be scared sometimes. They like to see something shocking, creepy, maybe even something that feels "wrong." I think that because sometime people may view life as mundane and boring, and need that extra "jump," or change in emotion in life. Some people may use it as a way to vent. There are people who are very quiet and timid and have no way of speaking up for themselves, and so instead of back lashing at others, simply throw on a horror movie (the way some people use music as a means to vent). Some may like the psychological aspect of horror movies.
As someone else posted on here, movies like Cannibal Holocaust and Salo are filled with disgusting, distasteful images. You may question the director or writer of the movie but also in a sense you may ask yourself... is society really that bad? Some people (more intelligent I would say) like to understand what's going on with the world, understand why people may act the way they do. People like to dig into the personalities of others and look at the psychologies of the world, and many horror movies (such as those) touch on this disturbing aspects of life. Another reason is some people just want the adrenaline rush.

Which thrillers are considered to be "The best of all time"?
What makes a good thriller?
Plot twists that leave an audience stunned and amazed at having the rug spectacularly pulled out from under their feet. Action scenes that, spectacular though they might be, serve to strengthen the storyline, not just blow up helicopters. And, most of all, the kind of stories that grip you like a vice, never knowing what's coming until the very end.
There are so many thriller films that are considered to be the best of all time. The main thriller films which I consider to be the best of times are "Se7en" and many more. Some people might disagree with me, but i guarantee you that after you have seen these thrillers, you will agree with that they are the best thrillers of all time.
Headhunters (2011) Morten Tyldum This Scandinavian pulp noir thriller, based on the bestseller by Jo Nesbo, sees diminutive headhunter Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) compensate for his shortcomings via lucrative art thefts - until matters get horrifically out of hand. Subscribing to a visceral version of the Robert Towne school of filmmaking, where a movie is simply four or five moments, with the rest existing "to give those moments their impact and resonance", Headhunters gives us at least five never-to-be-forgotten set-pieces, plus a cracking performance from Hennie to glue it all together.
Se7en (1995) David Fincher
The film that established David Fincher's apparently inseparable relationship with the darker side of human existence, this bleak, bleak film noir sidesteps the cliches it appears to bury itself in (two mismatched cops, one black, one white; the old-timer on the edge of retirement; a brilliant serial killer with a twisted Biblical methodology) with fierce intelligence, manifested both in an unusual density of literary reference and through exceptional performances from a fine cast, with Morgan Freeman's haunted Somerset and Brad Pitt's feisty Mills more than ably matched. Then of course there's that ending.

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, KBE was an English film director and producer, He was often known as " The Master of Suspense", he pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. The 39 steps was Alfred Hitchcock's first "wrong nman" film, and is arguably the best of Hitchcock's British film work.
Christopher Nolan
Christopher Nolan is a British American thriller director whose narrative structures often reflect the mental constrution of the characters as in "The Dark Night", "The prestige" and Inception. Christopher Nolan was born in London 1970 and began making films at the age of 7. Mr Nolan directed his film "Following" in 1998. Which was a sucessfull.
David Cronenberg s a Canadian filmmaker, screenwriter and actor. He is one of the principal originators of what is commonly known as the body horror or venereal horror genre. This style of filmmaking explores people's fears of bodily transformation and infection. In his films, the psychological is typically intertwined with the physical. In the first half of his career, he explored these themes mostly through horror and science fiction, although his work has since expanded beyond these genres. He has been called "the most audacious and challenging narrative director in the English-speaking world.

Generic conventions of a thriller film
There are many features that characterise the thriller genre.
Here is a list with an explanation of various thriller conventions within a thriller mise-en-scene:
Lighting:
Noir lighting is the most commonly used style within classic and some times presents thrillers. This type of lighting usually portrays a chiaroscuro effect by using non-ambient light sources. For example, " A clockwork Orange", although more of a crime/drama movies uses noir lighting with a furious twist. This type of lighting is effective as it adds suspense and portrays characters as more of a dark threat, thus keeping audiences engaged and more captivated.
Camera Angles:
Long shots establish the environment the scene takes place in. Sometimes the director wants the audience to know, sometimes he doesn't. If he doesn't, the director will use more close-ups so the audience concentrates and possibly even identifies and empathise with one certain character. For example, in 'Coronation street Tina is pushed of a balcony', the director has used so many different camera angle shots to portay the tension between these two characters.
Characters:
Thrillers mostly focuses on illegal, dangerous characters. Usually involving characters that are part of a gang, spies, detectives or any kind of murders. Sometimes, important key characters are complete enigmas, about whom the audience doesn't find out much about information on them. some of these enigmas get cleared up at the end of the film, but sometimes the character stays mysterious and one never finds out their actual identity.
Location:
Generic thriller locations are usually enclosed areas which adds a sense of claustrophobia with no escape, no way out for the character in panic situations. Car parks are also very commonly used in thrillers. Other locations used in thriller films are plain. Enclosed locations generates more suspense and tension because the use of them infers that there is no escape for the character and we can only anticipate that something bad is going to happen.

WHAT IS A THRILLER?
A "thriller" is a genre of film which provokes a rush of emotions and is usually based around crime or espoinage. Thrillers put the audience in suspense and create a sense of expectation and anxiety. The films usually consist of many cliff-hangers, plot twits and scenes that effectively confuse and reveal the truth.
